July 4, 1776 marked the month, day, and year 13 American colonies declared their independence from the UK (f/k/a) the Kingdom of Great Britain. We commemorate and observe this milestone accomplishment in American History because it birthed the United States of America as an independent nation. Now hit rewind approx. 1,700 years. What happened? You guessed it! On or about 30 A.D. Jesus was crucified, buried, and rose from the grave. His selfless sacrifice bridged the separation between God and mankind! Yes, we all desire independent freedom but true freedom derives from our dependency in Christ and apart from Him we can do nothing. (John 15:5) So today, as you BBQ, pop fire crackers, watch fireworks, and spend time with family/friends be safe but most importantly remember that independent freedom can never measure up to dependent freedom we find in Christ.
