After Jesus predicted His death to the disciples, He said these powerful and convicting words in Luke 9:23, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and pick [take] up his cross daily and follow me.”
The phrase “pick up your cross and follow me” is a reference to Jesus’ teaching in the Gospels, particularly found in the above passage of text in Luke and also in Matthew 16:24 and Mark 8:34. In this inspiring teaching, Jesus is instructing His disciples on the cost of following Him (aka) discipleship. The “cross” represents a burden or sacrifice, and in the context of first-century Rome, it was also a symbol of suffering and death, as crucifixion was a form of execution.
My brothers and sister (aka) cross bearers, when Jesus says, “pick up your cross and follow me,” He is calling each of us to be willing to endure challenges, sacrifice personal desires, worldly ambitions, and even face persecution for the sake of our immovable and unshakable faith. It’s an invitation to live selflessly, putting God’s will above personal comfort or gain.
In a broader sense, it’s about embracing the struggles and responsibilities of being a disciple, knowing that this path may require perseverance, sacrifice, and a deep commitment to one’s faith.
Additionally and lastly, picking up your cross also means daily surrender—dying to our selfish desires and seeking God’s forgiveness for the ways we fall short. Each morning brings a new opportunity to repent and realign our hearts with His will. As we seek forgiveness, we die to self, letting go of pride and sinful habits. This daily act of humility allows Christ to live more fully in us, shaping us into His image.
Pray with me,
Abba Father, we come to You today seeking forgiveness. Help us to die to self and walk in the newness of life You offer. Help us to embrace the challenges and sacrifices that come with living out our faith, knowing that You are with us every step of the way. Teach us to surrender our will to Yours, trusting that Your plans are greater than our own. Give us the perseverance to carry our burdens with love, grace, humility, and the wisdom to seek Your guidance in every decision. May we unwaveringly and faithfully follow You, reflecting Your love, grace, mercy, power, peace, and sacrifice in all that we do. In Jesus’ name, Amen, Amen, and Amen!
