Life is not always predictable. Inevitably, there will be ups and downs along the way. Many of us want to trust God. When times are good, it can feel easier. But when times feel difficult, it is even more important to trust God. God’s immutable or unchanging character can give us a firm foundation when we feel unhappy, uncomfortable, unsteady, and uncertain.
Proverbs 3:5-6 commands you and I to, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on our own understanding. Seek His will in all we do, and He will show us which path to take.”
Well, the two commands cited in the NLT passage above says don’t depend on our own understanding and always seek God’s will. So to trust in God means to believe in the reliability, truth, ability or strength of something (meaning God) beyond our worldly understanding.
Sometimes our feelings get in our way, but trusting God is more than a feeling; it’s a choice to have faith in what He says even when our feelings or circumstances would have us believe something different. Our feelings and circumstances matter and are very much worth paying attention to and God cares about them both. But those things alone are not reliable enough to base our life on. They can change at any moment, even in an instant. God, on the other hand, does not change (Malachi 3:6 & Hebrews 13:8). He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow and therefore is worthy of our absolute trust.
Brothers and Sisters, spoiler alert…when Jesus Himself felt overwhelmed by what was before Him, and He went straight to His Father and though His disciples slept, God never left His side (Mark 14:-36).
At the end of the day, God loves us and we can show our trust in Him by communicating about all our feelings and circumstances with Him — the good and hard — through prayer. We shouldn’t let our unreliable and unstable emotions or feelings rule our lives; we should bring them to God so He can help us address them. God is never disappointed or frustrated by our struggles, doubts or pain. He cares about us, and we can trust Him with everything that is going on in our lives. Beside, all the days of our lives were ordained by God even before one day came to be (Psalm 139:16).
