“When God Closes the Door”
Beloved, one of the hardest realities to accept is that not every door is meant to remain open forever. We often pray for open doors, but we rarely thank God for the ones He closes. Yet sometimes the greatest expression of God’s mercy is not in what He allows, but in what He prevents.
When Noah finished building the ark and every person God had appointed was safely inside, the Lord shut the door. Genesis 7:16 simply says, “Then the Lord shut him in.” Noah didn’t close the door, and Noah couldn’t reopen it. The same God who invited people to repentance was the God who ultimately determined when the opportunity had come to an end.
That moment reminds us of a powerful truth: there are some doors only God can close, and there are some doors only God can open. Noah’s responsibility was not to control the outcome. His responsibility was to obey. He trusted God when others mocked him, built the ark before a single drop of rain had fallen, and remained faithful until God completed what He had promised.
Likewise, in the New Testament, Jesus declared in Revelation 3:7, “What He opens no one can shut, and what He shuts no one can open.” God’s authority is absolute. When He opens a door of opportunity, no person can stand in the way. And when He closes a door, it is because His wisdom sees what ours cannot.
Throughout Scripture, we see the beauty of God’s perfect timing. In each biblical account, people experienced seasons of waiting, uncertainty, and seemingly impossible circumstances. Yet in every story, God proved that His timing was perfect and His purposes never failed.
The same is true for you and me. We have experienced seasons of waiting, uncertainty, and circumstances that seemed impossible. Yet, time and again, God has proven that His timing is perfect and His purposes never fail.
Beloved, if you’re currently standing in front of a closed a door in your life, don’t spend your days trying to force it back open. Trust that the One who closed it loves you enough to protect you. He sees what you cannot see and knows what you do not know. Sometimes a closed door is not rejection—it is divine redirection. And when God opens the next door, no force on earth will be able to keep you from walking through it.
Pray with me: Father God, thank You for Your perfect wisdom and unfailing timing. Help me to trust You when You close doors that I do not understand and give me the faith to walk through every door You open. Teach me to obey You as Noah did, even when others do not understand. Strengthen my heart to trust that Your plans are always greater than my own, and remind me that what You open no one can shut, and what You shut no one can open.
