“A Lot of What Weighs You Down Isn’t Yours To Carry”
Beloved, one of the enemy’s greatest tactics is convincing us to carry burdens God never asked us to carry. Many of us are walking through life weighed down by fear, guilt, shame, anxiety, offense, unrealistic expectations, and the opinions of others. Over time, these burdens become so familiar that we stop questioning whether they were ever ours to hold in the first place.
The truth is, a lot of what weighs you down isn’t yours.
Some of it belongs to yesterday. Some of it belongs to other people. Some of it belongs to circumstances you cannot control. And some of it comes from lies the enemy has whispered so long that they began to sound like truth. But just because you have been carrying it does not mean God intended for you to keep carrying it.
In the Old Testament, Psalm 55:22 reminds us, “Cast your burden on the Lord, and He will sustain you; He will never permit the righteous to be moved.” God never asked you to carry every burden in your own strength. He invites you to release it to Him because He is strong enough to carry what is crushing you.
Likewise, in the New Testament, Jesus says in Matthew 11:28-30, “Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Notice His invitation is not to keep striving harder or pretending to be stronger. His invitation is to come to Him. Real rest is found in surrender.
Sometimes we carry guilt that grace has already covered. Sometimes we carry shame from seasons God has already redeemed. Sometimes we carry responsibility for outcomes that were never ours to control. We exhaust ourselves trying to fix everything, hold everything together, and carry everyone else, while quietly breaking under the weight.
But God is gently reminding you today: release what was never yours to carry.
You do not have to carry tomorrow’s worries today. You do not have to carry everyone’s expectations. You do not have to carry pain that God is ready to heal. You do not have to carry battles that belong to the Lord.
If that’s you today, I challenge you to do these three things: 1. let it go, 2. lay it down, and 3. give it to God. Because what feels unbearable in your hands becomes manageable in His. The same God who carries the weight of the world can certainly carry what has been weighing on your heart.
Pray with me: Father God, forgive me for carrying burdens You never intended for me to carry. Today I release every fear, every anxiety, every weight, and every burden into Your hands. Help me let go of guilt, shame, pressure, and anything that is stealing my peace. Teach me to trust You fully and rest in Your strength instead of my own. Thank You for being my refuge, my sustainer, and the One who carries me when life feels heavy. In Jesus name, I pray, believe, receive, and praise in advance, Amen and Amen!
