What We Want To Hear

Beloved, one of the greatest spiritual dangers we face is this: we tend to follow whatever agrees with us. We like voices that validate our opinions, justify our emotions, and confirm our prejudices. But comfort is not always truth. And agreement is not always alignment with God. When we only listen to what we want to hear, we slowly drift from what we need to hear — the voice of the Lord.

The Old Testament warns us of this tendency. Proverbs 14:12 says, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” What seems right can still be wrong. Our feelings can be loud, our bias can feel convincing, and our pride can sound wise — yet all of it can lead us away from God’s heart. Scripture reminds us: our conclusions must bow to His truth.

The New Testament echoes this warning. Paul writes in 2 Timothy 4:3, “For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine… instead, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.” People choose voices that confirm their prejudices. They don’t want correction — they want confirmation. But disciples don’t follow preference. Disciples follow Jesus.

So Beloved, we must ask ourselves: Am I following truth, or simply following what agrees with me? God’s Word will sometimes confront us. It will stretch us, convict us, humble us, and call us higher. That is not rejection — that is love. Truth doesn’t confirm prejudice — it transforms the heart.

Pray with me: Father God, guard my heart from only chasing voices that tell me what I want to hear. Expose any prejudice, pride, or stubbornness within me. Give me a teachable spirit and a desire for Your truth above my opinions. Shape me by Your Word, correct me where needed, and lead me in Your ways — in Jesus’ name, I pray, believe, receive, and praise in advance, Amen!
