The God Who Called Her by Name

Beloved, Hagar’s story is one of the most powerful reminders in Scripture that people may overlook you, but God never does.

Hagar was an Egyptian servant. In the eyes of the society around her, she had little status and very little power over what happened to her. After conflict arose in Abraham’s household, Hagar fled into the wilderness. She was hurting, alone, and probably wondering whether anybody cared what happened to her.

But then God met her there.

And what moves me is how personal the encounter became. In Genesis 16:8, the angel of the LORD said, “Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?”

God called her by name.

People may have seen a servant. God saw Hagar.

People may have defined her by her position. God addressed her by her name.

And then something extraordinary happened. After encountering God, Hagar declared in Genesis 16:13, “You are the God who sees me.” She called Him El Roi—the God who sees.

Think about that. A woman whom society could easily overlook experienced God so personally that her encounter gave us one of Scripture’s most beautiful descriptions of His character:

The God who sees me.

And maybe that’s the word somebody needs today.

You may feel forgotten. You may feel insignificant. You may wonder whether anybody sees the tears you’ve cried, the sacrifices you’ve made, or the battles you’ve fought privately.

El Roi sees you.

Jesus reinforces this truth in Luke 12:6–7, teaching that not even the sparrows are forgotten before God and that even the hairs of our heads are numbered. If God notices the sparrow, beloved, He certainly hasn’t forgotten you.

Your title doesn’t determine your value. Your position doesn’t determine your worth. And other people’s inability to recognize you doesn’t mean heaven has overlooked you.

The God who saw Hagar in the wilderness sees you right where you are—and He knows you by name.

Pray with me: Father God, thank You for being El Roi, the God who sees me. When I feel forgotten, remind me that You know my name. When others overlook me, remind me that my worth comes from You. You see every tear, every struggle, and every hidden burden. Help me trust that even in my wilderness, I am never outside Your sight or beyond Your care. In Jesus’ name, I pray, believe, receive, and praise in advance. Amen.
