Before You Pray
Beloved, it is natural to bring our needs before God. He invites us to ask, seek, and knock. But before we present another request, perhaps we should pause long enough to remember His faithfulness. Gratitude has a way of changing our perspective. It reminds us that the same God we are trusting for tomorrow has already been faithful yesterday.
Before you pray for what you want, thank God for what you already have.
Too often we become so focused on the next blessing that we overlook the ones we are already living in. The breath in your lungs, the roof over your head, the people who love you, the food on your table, the mercy you received this morning, and the grace that carried you through yesterday are all reminders that God has been better to us than we deserve.
In the Old Testament, Psalm 103:2 declares, “Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all His benefits.” The psalmist understood that gratitude begins with remembering. When we intentionally recall God’s goodness, our hearts are strengthened, and our faith grows. We stop seeing only what we lack and begin celebrating what God has already provided.
Likewise, in the New Testament, Philippians 4:6 reminds us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Notice that thanksgiving comes before the request. God desires that our prayers be filled not only with faith for what He will do, but also with gratitude for what He has already done.
A grateful heart is a peaceful heart. It recognizes that every good and perfect gift comes from the Father. Gratitude doesn’t ignore life’s challenges, but it refuses to let those challenges overshadow God’s faithfulness. When you begin counting your blessings instead of your burdens, you often discover that you already have more reasons to praise God than to complain.
So today, before you ask God for the next blessing, stop and thank Him for the blessings you’re already holding. Thank Him for His grace, His mercy, His protection, His provision, and His unfailing love. A heart filled with gratitude is always prepared to receive what God has next.
Pray with me: Father God, thank You for every blessing You have poured into my life, both seen and unseen. Forgive me for the times I have focused more on what I lack than on the abundance You have already provided. Fill my heart with gratitude, strengthen my faith through remembrance, and teach me to praise You in every season. May thanksgiving always be the foundation of my prayers, and may my life continually reflect appreciation for Your goodness. In Jesus name, I pray, believe, receive, and praise in advance, Amen.
