DON’T PANIC — THE GATES WILL NOT PREVAIL
Beloved, there are moments when life gives us every reason to panic. The diagnosis, the financial pressure, political and economic unrest, the family crisis, the uncertainty of tomorrow—fear starts whispering, “What are you going to do now?” But before panic takes control, remember where Jesus took His disciples.
In Matthew 16, Jesus brought them to the region of Caesarea Philippi, an area known for pagan worship, including a sanctuary dedicated to the Greek god Pan. Interestingly, our English word “panic” traces back to the Greek panikos, a sudden terror associated with Pan.
And right there, surrounded by reminders of false gods and pagan worship, Peter made a declaration about Jesus: “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” — Matthew 16:16
Then Jesus answered with one of the boldest promises in Scripture: “I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.” — Matthew 16:18
Don’t miss the picture.
In a place associated with Pan, Jesus gave His disciples a reason not to panic.
He was reminding them—and us—that darkness doesn’t get the final word. Hell doesn’t get the final word. Fear doesn’t get the final word. Jesus does.
Beloved, maybe you’re standing in front of something today that looks bigger than you. And maybe it is bigger than you—but it is not bigger than your God.
So don’t allow panic to make you forget who’s standing with you.
When fear says, “It’s over,” Jesus says, “I’m still building.”
When darkness says, “We’ve won,” Jesus says, “The gates of Hades will not prevail.”
And when panic asks, “What are you going to do?” faith answers, “I’m going to stand on the Rock.”
Pray with me: Father God, when fear tries to overwhelm me, remind me who Jesus is—the Christ, the Son of the living God. Replace my panic with faith and my fear with confidence in You. Help me stand firmly on Your Word, knowing that darkness cannot defeat what Christ is building. In Jesus’ name, I pray, believe, receive, and praise in advance. Amen.
Don’t panic. Jesus is still Lord, Christ is still building His Church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail.
