Rule # 1

Rule #1: Never Make God #2

Beloved, life will always compete for first place in your heart. Family, career, money, relationships, success, responsibilities, and even our dreams can slowly move into a position that belongs to God alone. None of those things are necessarily wrong, but they become dangerous when a blessing from God becomes more important than the God who gave the blessing.

So here’s a rule worth living by: Rule #1: Never make God #2.

In the Old Testament, Exodus 20:3 says, “You shall have no other gods before Me.” We may not bow before golden statues today, but anything we consistently place ahead of God can become an idol. Sometimes our greatest idol isn’t something evil—it’s something good that we’ve allowed to occupy God’s position.

Jesus makes the priority even clearer in Matthew 6:33: “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

Notice that word: first.

Not God after the career. Not God after the relationship. Not God after we’ve exhausted every other option. God first.

And here’s where it gets personal: it’s possible to say God is number one while our schedule says He’s number five. We can say He’s our priority while giving Him what’s left of our time, attention, energy, and devotion.

God doesn’t want the leftovers of our lives. He wants our hearts. Therefore, before you make the decision, seek God. Before you respond in anger, seek God. Before you chase the opportunity, seek God. Before you start your day scrolling through everything the world has to say, spend some time listening to what God has already said.

When God is first, everything else finds its proper place. That doesn’t mean life becomes perfect. It means your life has the right foundation.

So today, check the order of your heart. If something has quietly moved ahead of God, put it back where it belongs. Because God didn’t give His second best for us. He gave us His Son.

Rule #1: Never make God #2.

Pray with me: Father God, forgive me for every time I’ve allowed something or someone to take the place that belongs to You. Search my heart and reveal anything I’ve placed ahead of You. Teach me to seek You first, trust You completely, and honor You in every area of my life. May You never receive what’s left of me, but always the very first and best of me. In Jesus’ name, I pray, believe, receive, and praise in advance. Amen.
