“The Smooth Criminal on the Cross”
Beloved, one of the greatest pictures of grace in scripture was not a preacher, a prophet, or a polished religious leader—it was a criminal hanging on a cross beside Jesus.
☑️A guilty man.
☑️A broken man.
☑️A man with a past nobody could defend. And yet… Jesus still made room for him.
In Luke 23:42–43, the thief says, “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.” And Jesus responds, “Today you will be with Me in paradise.”
Now think about that. The man had no time left to clean up his life. No opportunity to make things right publicly. No chance to build a reputation or prove himself. All he had was a sincere moment of faith. And that was enough for Jesus. Because salvation was never about perfection—it was always about surrender.
Meanwhile, one criminal mocked Jesus while the other recognized Him. One hardened his heart while the other humbled himself. And in his final moments, that thief realized something many religious people still miss: Grace cannot be earned. It can only be received.
Now, this does not glorify the man’s sin—it magnifies God’s mercy. It reminds us that nobody is too far gone, too broken, or too late for Jesus to save.
Because the cross proves that even at your worst, God’s grace can still reach you.
Therefore, stop believing the lie that your past disqualifies you. Stop thinking your failures are greater than God’s forgiveness. If Jesus could extend mercy to a criminal in his final moments, then His grace is still available for you today. Because the ground at the cross is level.
The thief brought nothing but faith. And Jesus gave him everything.
So Beloved, don’t wait until you have your life perfectly together to come to God. Come honestly. Come humbly. Come now. Because grace still saves sinners.
Pray with me: Father God, thank You for Your mercy and grace that reaches beyond my failures and mistakes. Help me never believe the lie that I am too far gone for Your love. Teach me to come before You with humility, faith, and surrender, trusting that Your grace is greater than my past— in Jesus name, I pray, believe, receive, and praise in advance, Amen.
